Athlete Spotlight: Rob

What made you choose CrossFit True?
My wife Julie started working out about a year before I joined and she obviously loved it. My job at the time was a huge source of stress and I wasn’t getting enough (any) exercise. Stress and lack of deadlifts were taking a toll on my mental and physical health. I needed to do something and TA seemed like it was worth a try.
How long have you been training with us?
3 1/2 years
What do you do for the short time of the day that you aren’t with us (i.e. a job)?
Despite what Dan might think, I’m not a spy or an arms dealer. I travel to funky places because I do environmental research for an international think-tank.
How is your nutrition? Do you eat a certain way? If so when did you make the switch?
I go back and forth. I did one Lurong and I really stuck with it, but then I tried another and couldn’t get into it. I occasionally avoid bread, pasta, etc for a week or two, but I can’t give them up completely…
What are your 3 favorite movements/exercises?
Front squats, box jumps, and HPCs
How about a favorite WOD?
Anything without burpees
What is your favorite workout song?
Something angry … “Shipping Up To Boston” or “Killing In The Name”
What is your favorite type of workout? (AMRAP, Chipper, Ladder, Rounds for time?)
Descending ladders – I like things that get easier over time.
Have you changed at all physically or mentally since starting to train with us?
I regularly wake up at 5AM, I’m a lot stronger, and I have less lower back pain.
What are your current goals?
Drop 10 lbs, do more pull-ups, don’t get injured
What is your favorite color?
sweaty gym-short gray
What can you do now that you weren’t able to do before training at CrossFit True?
1 kipping pull-up…maybe 2?
Say something else, anything!
There’s not a lot of things that would get me out of bed at 5AM, but TA is a great part of my life. The coaches do a great job building a fun and inclusive community. I’m looking forward to many more years of WODs.

What made you choose True Athletics?
I was rock climbing at the time and was looking for a change.  With two kids I no longer had the luxury of spending hours at the gyms.  I wanted to get stronger, but bootcamps didn’t appeal to me. I found myself leaving bootcamps more stressed than when I arrived.  The climbing community is close knit and I really loved the idea of a CrossFit community, meeting people from all walks of life and finding a common bond.

How long have you been Training with us?  Four years!!!  I had my first official CrossFit class on August 14th.  I know remember this because it is my dad’s birthday.  He passed away 14 years ago and I think he would have LOVED Crossfit.  He was a Marine and was always very fit.

What do you do for the short time of the day that you aren’t with us (i.e. a job)? I teach yoga/meditation classes and practice Reflexology.  If you are stressed or in pain, talk to me.Julie1

How is your nutrition?  Do you eat a certain way?  If so when did you make the switch?  I eat paleo-ish.  I’m looking forward to our next life-style challenge.  I need a re-boot.

Do you have a favorite exercise movement (gymnastics move, lift, etc)?  BURPEES!!!  Also, deadlifts, push ups, pull ups, and rope climbs.

How about a favorite WOD? Fran used to be my favorite, but now, I just don’t care.

What is your favorite workout song? I am a sucker for 80’s classics.

Have you changed at all physically or mentally since starting to train with us?  I feel MUCH stronger What are your current goals?  I would love to nail a free-standing handstand for more than 10 seconds and a 300# Deadlift.  Why not?

What is your favorite color? Blue

What can you do now that you weren’t able to do before training at True Athletics? I can do a lot more pull ups and push ups than I could do before.  I am also better at rowing.  My double-unders still stink though.

Say something else, anything!   I love True Athletics.  The coaches are great, knowledgeable, funny, and real.  The members are a great crew.  All ages, all backgrounds, all really nice.  I enjoy working out with everyone, working hard, and also just hanging out when the workout is done.

May Athlete Spotlight – Sharon G

Seven months ago, I started at True Athletics through a PTA organized fund raiser. I always enjoyed outdoor activities like hiking, running and biking, so I thought I’d try something new and help out my son’s school at the same time. That decision turned out to be one of the best things I did for myself.
Honestly, I had no idea what CrossFit was so I had no misconception about it! I did not like it at first it as I found the activity was hard and painful but as time went on, and with the encouragement of the coaches and team members, I stuck with it. Now I look forward to going and working out. What I enjoy about cross fit is each work out is different and I learn something new each time I go.
I have no favorite exercise yet but my least favorite are Burpee’s! My goals, then and now are to build strength and stamina.  I want to be active and strong for myself and my family.
