Athlete Spotlight: Marina

What made you choose CrossFit True?

I had been doing Crossfit in Columbus,Ohio for 3 years and when I moved out to Connecticut, I wanted to continue crossfit classes. I searched the closest Crossfit gym to me and it brought me to CrossFit True! 

What kept me at Crossfit True though was the amazing community and coaches. 

How long have you been training with us?

I have been training at CrossFit True for about 2 years. 

What has been your proudest moment in the past 90 days?

My proudest moment has been being able to start working on deadlift heavier again! I hurt my back last October so it’s been a slow and steady race to be able to start lifting much heavier again. 

When you’re not at the gym, what do you do for work? What do you do for fun?

I am currently in my last year of law school at Quinnipiac so that takes up much of my time when I’m not at the gym. For fun, I love to go to local coffee shops, read, and go thrifting.  

How is your nutrition? How has it changed since joining CrossFit True?

Since working with Moe at our monthly nutritional sessions, my attitude towards meal prep and meals in general has changed significantly. I’m actually excited to prepare meals and with Moe’s help, I have been able to incorporate lots of protein and vegetables into each meal I make. I used to see nutrition as both a hassle and daunting obstacle, but now I really enjoy seeing the variety of healthy and delicious foods I have become capable of making!

What are your 3 favorite movements/exercises? 

I love the assault bike, sit-ups, and power cleans. 

What is your favorite style workout? (AMRAP, EMOM, Rounds for Time, etc)

EMOM for sure. 

What about your favorite workout?

I’m not sure about a favorite workout, but I love workouts that are long and  force you to pace yourself rather than all out springs with a small time cap. 

Any favorite workout songs? 

In the gym, I love when Swedish House Mafia randomly comes on its so good. But in general Death Grips is my go to artist for workout songs. 

Have you changed physically or mentally since you’ve been working out with us?

I have definitely gained more muscle and have become more toned since working out with CrossFit True. Mentally, CrossFit True has been my favorite way to relax when I’m not studying. When I walk through the doors, I know I will be given support, motivation, and the confidence I need to not only endure the workout, but to take on with me through the rest of the day. 

What are your current goals?

My current goals are to be able to do pull-ups, and work on strengthening my upper body. I also would like to be able to do more double-unders!

How have your goals changed since you joined? 

Honestly, my goals used to be simply just showing up to class. Now my goals are to push myself each class a little farther than the last and keep going even when I am exhausted and want to stop before the clock stops or the workout is over. 

What has been the biggest surprise since joining CF True?

The biggest surprise joining CrossFit True is the amazing community. I have made the most amazing friends through this gym. Not only do I get to workout with these wonderful people, but I see them outside the gym whether it be for coffee, dinner parties, or beach days. 

What can you do now that you couldn’t do before joining?

Something I’m really proud of that I could not do before joining was continue with workouts without stopping or giving up. Now, I pace myself during workouts, even when I want to quit and give up, I don’t. 

Movement wise, I can now do double-unders and band assisted pull-ups.
