Athlete Spotlight: Rich

Thanks for being this months Athlete Spotlight!
What made you choose CrossFit True?

Our old gym closed. I tried to do my own thing, I tried another box, but none of them were really doing it for me. I came here, and I found a coach and staff that were professional, I like the programming as it was similar to our old gym. The people are inviting, the workouts are great, and it’s honestly one of, if not the best crossfit I’ve gone to!

How long have you been training with us?

About a year and half now!

What has been your proudest moment in the past 90 days?

Just being more consistent, I may not be at the gym 5 days a week, but I’ve been doing lifts I missed at work, and been doing extra cardio on the Peloton at home! If I had to pick a specific moment, it was during a WOD, and I was keeping pace with some incredibly fit people, now it may have been their active recovery day or something, but it felt good to be keeping up again!

Proofreading what I wrote, proudest moment keeping my head up during shuttle runs!

When you’re not at the gym, what do you do for work? What do you do for fun?

I teach HS Spanish in Naugatuck and I’m also a 29 year veteran of the CT Army National Guard where I supervise 3 Army school houses that we run in Niantic.

For fun I snowboard, play golf, and go camping with family and friends!

How is your nutrition? How has it changed since joining CrossFit True?

My nutrition has been a** for quite a long time, but I had a big wake up call recently and I didn’t wait till Monday, I didn’t wait till the next week, I decided right then and there I had to get my act together!

My nutrition has stayed continuously crappy until recently! About two weeks into getting my act together I joined the CrossFit True Nutritional Challenge and the support group and ideas have been great! The best part has just been doing reflections daily, I often try to look at them when I’m struggling and it helps keep me focused.

What are your 3 favorite movements/exercises?

Power Cleans

Bike Cal

Toes to Bar, even though I suck at them!

What is your favorite style workout? (AMRAP, EMOM, Rounds for Time, etc)

AMRAP, cause if you don’t feel like busting your tail, you can secretly mail it in and sandbag!

What about your favorite workout?

’ll probably get a lot of crap for this, but I’d have to say Fran

Any favorite workout songs?

No, I like the playlists at the gym, and I absolutely despise that Sally Up or Sally Down song!!!!

Have you changed physically or mentally since you’ve been working out with us?

Uhm…. Who knows? Until recently I haven’t had my act together too well! We will find out in April!

What are your current goals?

To get a 540 on my Army Combat Fitness Test! Easy enough, but goal is to get at least under 18:00 on the two mile run after the first 5 events! I’d actually love to run one of these at CFT one day or have the Guard run one for members of the gym.

How have your goals changed since you joined?

They haven’t, I’m just finally in the right mindset

What has been the biggest surprise since joining CF True?

Professionalism. Cleanliness. New Equipment. Programming!

What can you do now that you couldn’t do before joining?

Stand a chance at beating Kieran on the bike calories!

Say something else, Anything!

Mia barked at me the other day, kidding around of course, and I just had to go on a mini rant about how great the gym was! If anyone out there, especially my former CFB members,  isn’t a member and goes somewhere else or does their own thing, come here, give it a month or two and you’ll have a new home! I promise there’s a 99.9% chance it’s  better than what you are doing now, and at 530am you can always figure it out!
