What made you choose CrossFit True?

My husband Nick had been a member at True and had told me repeatedly to try it out. I had tried CrossFit elsewhere in the past and had a negative experience so I was reluctant. He might say stubborn. It took just one class to realize he was right, but we won’t tell him that.

How long have you been training with us?

It’s been just over one glorious year.

What has been your proudest moment in the past 90 days?

I always saw the RX weight suggestions as something meant for someone else, someone stronger. Just lately I’ve been able to complete several workouts with the male RX weight; it’s a threshold I didn’t ever expect to cross.

When you’re not at the gym, what do you do for work? What do you do for fun?

I work at Tecton Architects in Hartford where I’m designing a school for the City of Providence. I used to dance professionally so I love to move; almost anything active is fun to me.

How is your nutrition? How has it changed since joining CrossFit True?

It has changed, yes. I’m definitely eating more healthily and notice a big difference in my workouts should I slip into old habits. I’m also drinking less? Working-out hungover is not it.

What are your 3 favorite movements/exercises?

I like to run and anything fast-paced, plyometric or explosive. If jump is in the name I’ll probably like it.

What is your favorite style workout? (AMRAP, EMOM, Rounds for Time, etc)

Definitely Rounds for Time. AMRAP workouts are evil.

What about your favorite workout?

I did The Murph this year for the first time and really enjoyed it. It felt like my whole body turned inside out but potentially in a good way?

Any favorite workout songs?

In the gym, anything with a great beat and a short intro. Because of all the dance training, I like to workout with the beat.

Have you changed physically or mentally since you’ve been working out with us?

Definitely yes. I’ve noticed a few changes physically. Mostly, graduating from the mental state of believing that I’m not capable or worthy of taking up space in a CrossFit environment has been extremely liberating.

What are your current goals?

My banded pull-ups have become kipping pull-ups and now slowly my reps are increasing. One day I’ll do a muscle-up and I’ll be very proud of myself.

How have your goals changed since you joined?

I wanted a challenge and CrossFit is definitely that. My focus was to get a grasp of the movements but now I’m starting to increase the weight to see what happens.

What has been the biggest surprise since joining CF True?

The community! Both at True and on a larger scale. My husband and I have visited CrossFit gyms in other countries while we have been traveling and we love that the community of encouragement and friendship extends beyond our local CrossFit box.

What can you do now that you couldn’t do before joining?

I can do many new things. One big one that I noticed recently is that for the first time I am able to lie on my back without pain in my lower back. A huge and unexpected win.

Say something else, Anything!

Jess loves it when you park in her spot.
