From Intimidated by the Weight Room to Embracing Challenges: Marina’s Story

Marina's Story

When Marina was in high school, fitness wasn’t something she felt particularly confident about.

Like many people, she spent time working out at the YMCA, but never really saw the results she was hoping for. Looking back, she admits she wasn’t paying much attention to nutrition and mostly stuck to cardio machines because the weight room felt intimidating.

If you’ve ever walked into a gym and felt unsure of where to start, you’re not alone. Marina knows exactly what that feels like.

Her first introduction to CrossFit actually came through a gym class in high school. While some people fall in love with CrossFit immediately, that wasn’t Marina’s experience.

At the time, the idea of doing a hard workout and then sitting through the rest of the school day feeling sweaty wasn’t exactly appealing.

“It just didn’t click for me,” she laughs.

A few years later, her sister convinced her to give it another try while she was in college.

This time, she enjoyed it more and started attending classes a few days a week. But like many people starting something new, she mostly stayed within her comfort zone. She showed up, participated, and built consistency, but wasn’t necessarily pushing herself to see what she was truly capable of.

Then life brought her to Hamden.

When Marina started law school, she knew exercise needed to remain part of her routine. The demands of school were intense, and she quickly realized that fitness wasn’t just about physical health anymore.

It was about mental health too.

The gym became a place where she could step away from studying, clear her mind, and focus on something other than case law and exams.

That routine became even more important while preparing for the Bar Exam. With long study days and very little free time, Marina didn’t have the luxury of “finding time” to work out. She had to intentionally make it part of her schedule.

And that’s exactly what she did.The discipline she developed during that season helped create a consistency that would continue long after the exam was over.

But it wasn’t until 2024 that something really shifted. For years, Marina had been showing up. Now she wanted more.

She started challenging herself to lift heavier.

She pushed a little harder during workouts.

She became more willing to step outside of her comfort zone.

And perhaps most importantly, she started seeing herself differently.

Today, one of her favorite moments during a tough workout isn’t necessarily crossing the finish line. It’s realizing she’s in the middle of something difficult and knowing she can handle it. Sometimes she’ll even stop for a moment, smile, and appreciate just how far she’s come.

Not because the workout is easy.
But because she’s learned she can do hard things.

That’s what makes Marina’s story so inspiring.

It’s not about becoming the strongest person in the gym.

It’s not about perfection.

It’s about growth.

It’s about showing up consistently, even when life is busy.

It’s about building confidence one workout at a time.

It’s about discovering that you’re capable of more than you once believed.

For anyone who feels intimidated by fitness, unsure where to start, or worried they’re not “fit enough” to join a gym, Marina’s journey is a reminder that confidence rarely comes before action.

It comes from showing up.

Again and again.

And giving yourself the opportunity to grow.

Since joining CrossFit TRUE in August 2020, Marina has built more than strength and fitness.

She’s built trust in herself.

And that may be the most powerful result of all.
