They say Abs are made in the kitchen and they aren’t lying.
But what diet do you follow to get them? Should I eliminate carbs? Go low-fat? What about vegetarian/vegan? 21-day fix? 30-day challenge? 5-day cleanse?
There are literally hundreds of diets and they all make the same claim, a better body.
So, which one got me abs?
First, you need to know that I have tried many many diets…..and I will continue to try more in the future. Not because I believe I will find the one magical way of eating that will cure all life’s problems, but because I love science, I love experimenting with different approaches to health, and mostly I want to be able to give others my first account experiences, to know where they are coming from and to better understand the issues and results.
I remember, I was young, maybe 10. We were at “big nannies” house as we always were on Sundays. It was lunch time and we were making sandwiches. And I was thinking that I needed to make the healthiest choice, but at 10 years old I had no idea what that was. I couldn’t tell you what I put on my sandwich that day, but I know I was trying to do my best.
Fast forward and this has been the theme of my eating journey.
Over time my habits have adjusted. What I once thought was healthy, I have now found an even better option and I presume in the future even more adjustments will be made.
But it all didn’t happen overnight.
I went from the teenages who slept with a 2-liter bottle of soda next to her bed (you know, in case I got thirsty in the middle of the night) to now, soda is not even on my radar of things to drink.
Coffee from light & sweet
to black.
Daily bacon, egg, & cheese on a toasted everything bagel
to veggies, chicken sausage, and egg whites.
And the list goes on.
*although these adjustments may seem extreme, I don’t feel deprived. I don’t crave soda, never even think about it. I may indulge in a breakfast sandwich a few times a year, but I love my current breakfast.
In the end, there is no “diet” that got me abs. I got abs from
-Small adjustments over time
-Being consistent with healthier habits
-Testing & trying new habits
-Living a healthy lifestyle
I know this is not what you wanted to hear. But there is a brightspot.
I never have to do a 21-day tourture fest. I don’t have to starve myself. There is no need to deprive myself of foods I love or to shame myself for having a “treat” because I have built in these habits that keep me consistent 90% of the time.
And you don’t do this either. You don’t have to continue to do crash diet after crash diet to lose a quick few pounds and then gain it all back once the diet ends.
