Athlete Spotlight: Julie

What made you choose CrossFit True? 

I was looking to get back into CrossFit after taking a couple years off. I had visited a few local gyms, but CrossFit True just seemed like a great fit.

How long have you been training with us? 

Since October of 2022

What has been your proudest moment in the past 90 days? 

I had completely lost my ability to do kipping pullups for a while. Over the past few months, Moe has been giving me some great pointers on my technique which has helped me get them back. I did over 50 of them in a recent WOD which was a huge milestone for me. 

When you’re not at the gym, what do you do for work? What do you do for fun? 

I work in medical device sales, providing support to surgeons while they use my products in the OR. 

In my free time, I love to hangout with my husband and daughter. I also like to ski, run 5k races with friends and family, get together with my book club, go to wineries/breweries and watch/listen to anything true-crime. 

How is your nutrition? How has it changed since joining CrossFit True? 

I’ve recently been participating in the 2024 Kickstart Challenge and it has been such an eye-opener. In just a few short weeks, it’s dramatically changed my relationship with food. Not only have I been steadily losing weight, but my performance in the gym has improved and I just feel like a healthier person overall. 

What are your 3 favorite movements/exercises? 

Deadlifts, Hang Cleans & American KB Swings

What is your favorite style workout? (AMRAP, EMOM, Rounds for Time, etc)

Definitely Rounds for Time. I like knowing that there is a set amount of work to do, and the more I hustle the sooner I can complete it. 

What about your favorite workout?

I love the community aspect of Murph. DT is also one of my favorites. I like the format and the movements, and watching athletes perform it in the Games is always fun.  

Any favorite workout songs? 

I like anything with a good beat. My preference is usually hip-hop or house. 

Have you changed physically or mentally since you’ve been working out with us?

I’ve definitely gotten my strength back and then some! I’ve hit PR’s I never hit before…deadlifting 233# & back-squatting 163# were numbers I never thought I’d achieve. 

What are your current goals?

I’d like to get to a point where I can RX at least 50% of my workouts every week. My current focus is to push my strength and endurance steadily but also safely. 

How have your goals changed since you joined? 

I used to jump right to scaling so I could move faster and get more reps done. Now I’m more interested in testing my limits. Going for the RX weight or movement is something I’ve been prioritizing over speed and I’m having a lot of fun with it. 

What has been the biggest surprise since joining CF True?

When I first joined, I was kind of floating around from class to class based on my schedule and availability. Over the past few months I’ve been pretty committed to the 9am time slot. I’ve come to really enjoy the 9am crew and find that I’m motivated to get to the gym even more because of it. It’s made fitness even more fun for me. CF True went from being just a gym to an actual community that I belong to. 

What can you do now that you couldn’t do before joining?

Getting my kipping pullups back has been so exciting. Pregnancy really impacted my core strength, and building it back up under the guidance of great coaches has been such a fulfilling accomplishment.

CF True has such a strong support network which I love. I’ve belonged to several Crossfit gyms over the years, but True has the warmest and most welcoming members I’ve seen yet. Everybody just wants their fellow athletes to succeed and it shows. I love being here 🙂
